Flow and Flight was created for the Mandurah Arts Festival, transforming a small beachside ablution block into a vibrant celebration of Mandurah’s coastal identity and unique estuarine environment.
Drawing on Haylee’s personal connection to the area, the mural reflects the rhythms of life along Mandurah’s waterways. The design brings together dolphins from the local FinBook catalogue alongside seabirds in motion and familiar marine species such as blue swimmer crabs, rock lobsters and whiting. These elements are woven together through dynamic flowing lines that reference both the movement of water and the sweeping flight paths of coastal birds.
The artwork combines Haylee’s signature black-and-white realism with a fresh, retro-inspired palette of coastal pastels. This interplay between detailed wildlife imagery and bold abstract forms evokes Mandurah’s relaxed beachside atmosphere while celebrating the richness of its estuarine ecosystem. The flowing composition moves across the building’s surfaces, allowing the mural to respond to the surrounding landscape of open sky, trees and parkland.
Community participation formed an important part of the project. A community painting day held during the Mandurah Arts Festival invited local residents and visitors to help bring sections of the mural to life. Families, children and festival-goers picked up brushes and contributed to the artwork, creating a shared sense of ownership and connection to the finished piece.
