whitfords station underpass mural
Retro Roots & Suburban Boots pays tribute to the working-class spirit of Perth’s northern suburbs from the 1970s through the 1990s, drawing inspiration from classic car culture and beloved icons of suburban life. It references local touchstones like the Binishell dome, home milk deliveries, horse-shoe rolls, drive-in cinemas, Ugg boots, Aussie dogs, and vintage hairstyles—evoking a rich tapestry of collective memory from a bygone era.
The design was shaped by community input gathered through local Facebook groups. Haylee reached out to residents, inviting them to share their memories of growing up in the area during those decades. The nostalgic stories she received were thoughtfully woven into the narrative of the mural.
The final artwork captures the fun, playful essence of retro suburban life, celebrating its relaxed and vibrant character. The retro-inspired colour palette complements the nearby Main Roads colour palettes, while a bold splash of hot pink adds a fresh, contemporary twist that ties the composition together with energy and fun.
